Btrfs is young and promising file system with many great features.

Unfortunately Btrfs is also a very sophisticated file system with little experience accumulated by the industry because Btrfs is still considered experimental.

Btrfs have so may features and such a huge code base that it will remain experimental for a long time.

However deployment of any technology is a matter of testing and trials. For example XFS file system is mature and stable yet there are number of confirmed cases of data loss while other file systems shown to be more reliable in situations where XFS fails.

There are several cases for Btrfs. Data integrity is one of the advantages because Btrfs does automatic checksumming for data. Silent data corruption is a serious risk for any important data and we need all the help that file system can offer to protect from such damage and/or detect corruption early.

Scalability is another serious reason. Btrfs uses smaller memory footprint comparing to XFS and ZFS. Operating system might be operating with limited RAM so it is critical for file system to be able to work with large file systems effectively without using too much memory.

Due to built-in compression Btrfs may be faster and more space efficient on operations with compressible data.

Online defragmentation requires a bit of scripting comparing to ext4 but can be done safely while other applications are working.

Is Btrfs already stable enough to replace ext4 if only basic functionality (no RAID-like features) is used? Apparently Btrfs online defragment and resize features are already quite stable. However our testing revealed slowdown on concurrent access and a number of kernel warnings and crashes.

Settings and benchmarks

Some comparative benchmarks are available from our [[ext4 external journal benchmarks|fs_ext4_external_journal]].

Here we decided to try something different. We archived a large rsnapshot tree with nearly million folders and over 12 million files/hardlinks. The challenge was to avoid bottlenecks on extraction: GNU tar uses single-threaded compression so we piped pixz and tar to achieve better performance. Then GNU tar itself became bottleneck — it was extracting slower and slower utilising 1 CPU up to 100% while producing little IO. Replacing tar with bsdtar fixed the bottleneck problem and accelerated extraction of ~300 GiB archive to ext4 from 2322 minutes (tar) to 203 minutes (bsdtar) — 11 times faster. We used Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 with 8 GiB of RAM for testing. Archive was placed to dedicated HDD and extraction was done to another dedicated HDD.

Total time measured for extraction and other tests include sync command given immediately after extraction. Caches were dropped before each test.

Tests were conducted on "Linux 3.7-trunk-amd64 SMP Debian 3.7.3-1~experimental.1 x86_64 GNU/Linux".

In-place conversion read all the data in partition and slowly written ~50% of it. We expected it to finish faster as with such timing it is not clear if conversion is faster than backup/restore. In any case backup/restore would be safer especially if conversion is interrupted.

After conversion integrity of all files was checked: no corruption detected.

Btrfs is much worse than others in this test: it is actually so bad that it took nearly as much time to delete all extracted files as to extract them. Slowdown effect is reversed: deletion starts very slow then slowly accelerated as the number of remaining files decreases.

In the above graph (left to right): at 4:15 extraction to ext4 began (total 200 min.); when it reached the lowest mark between 7:00 and 8:00 the directory walk began (~28 min. total), followed by deletion of all files (77 min.). When everything was deleted one large file was copied to ext4 partition and then removed. By 11:00 ext4 test was over and Btrfs test has began. Extraction took 1101 min. (over 18 hours vs. ~3 hours on ext4). Directory walk took ~77 min. so around 7:00 deletion of files began. Only 798 min. (over 13 hours) later all the files were removed and exactly at 20:00 copying of one big file started. (Graph begins with mount and ends with umount; free space sampling interval is 3 min.).

Btrfs test with "inode_cache" was dismissed when deleting large file was interrupted ~5 hours later by rebooting (rm process was impossible to terminate using kill -9).


Notes / Caveats

  • NILFS2 times are ideal as the measurements were taken without nilfs_cleanerd (background cleaning) running.

  • Btrfs autodefrag mount option can not be disabled without umount.

  • Default Btrfs mount options are far from optimal. Concurrent access to Btrfs was badly lagging, especially over NFS4. "thread_pool=16" mount option helped to relieve this problem a little.

  • btrfs-cache still works on partition after umount for ~5..10 min. (in some cases reading up to 300 MiB). This is causing unexpected delays during shutdown.

  • It takes unusually long time to mount large Btrfs file system (~5...15 min.), especially if nospace_cache mount option is used (default space_cache is faster).

Although Btrfs was stable during benchmark we experienced several crashes on concurrent access during Btrfs trial. Operating system continued to work but access to Btrfs partition stopped and no applications accessing it could be terminated, neither it was possible to unmount or browse Btrfs partition after crash.

Conclusion

Btrfs demonstrated very poor scalability. In this test the file system is relatively small with just under 500 GiB of data but Btrfs were getting slower and slower as more files were copied to partition.

Practical use of Btrfs on large partition (> 6 TiB) is difficult due to lag and general file system slowness especially during concurrent access.

Deleting files from Btrfs is very slow. Btrfs appears to noticeably suffer from fragmentation.

Considering troubles with concurrent access and numerous kernel warnings and crashes Btrfs is not ready for serious use even with latest Linux-3.8 kernel.

On the good side, we didn't see any data corruption found on Btrfs.

Update 2013-04

Since upgrade to Linux-3.8.3 (and later to Linux-3.8.5) we experienced no Btrfs crashes whatsoever.
